![]() The zettelkasten is a way of putting this existing framework into written form, giving you a tangible platform to edit, refine, and optimize your exiting knowledge and connections.Īs we know from our experience with SRS, we make information permanent by repeatedly retrieving and bringing it mind. We hold a web of knowledge in our minds, and when we come across a new piece of useful information, we interpret it context of our existing web, and then find a way to slot it and connect it to all relevant nodes. Zettelkasten is an augmentation for your brain which allows you to take your most important thoughts/ideas/insights and make them highly refined and permanent.Ītomic linked notes mirror the way our minds already work. Although a great tool for writers, it has a much more fundamental and universally useful purpose. Hey man, I used to think the same way as you but now I understand the purpose of zettelkasten. Tldr Zettelkasten is great for linking thoughts and ideas and becomes less useful if working mostly with reference information. I have used Zettelkasten for combing grammar ideas together, a grammar reference is great but often focuses solely on each individual grammar point in isolation and rarely do you use just one grammar idea in a sentence so I write notes about how grammar points interact with each other especially if I found them confusing at some point. I agree that Zettelkasten isn't good for language learning but I think that is because language learning is a translation activity learning new words and grammar is about expressing thoughts not necessarily creating new thoughts. It also helps with organizing my information from hobbies, I like to design and build my own furniture and being able to have notes about woodworking and metalworking link to each other when mentioning joining wood and metal is super useful no matter whether that information came from my metalworking study or woodworking. It helps me be more complete in my work knowledge. When I take classes a lot of info is focused solely on the topic of the course but relates to other topics linked notes like Zettelkasten let me follow a different chain of thought than the exact same path the class took. I found that Zettelkasten like systems were great for merging classes and learning together.
